From Seinfeld, "Pez Dispenser" (1992)
GEORGE: I have no power Do you understand? I need hand. I have no hand.KRAMER: Break up with her
GEORGE: What?
KRAMER: You break up with her. You reverse everything that way.
JERRY: A preemptive breakup.
GEORGE: A preemptive breakup. This is an incredible idea. I got nothing to lose.
We either break up which she would do anyway but at least I go out with some
Dignity. Completely turn the tables. It's absolutely brilliant.
Tubby always had a pretty good defense.
Taking a page out of the George Constanza playbook this time, embattled Kentucky Head Basketball Coach Tubby Smith today accepted a head coaching position at The University of Minnesota.
A law firm or a corporation might tell a struggling employee to start looking for other work and still allow them to work for the business until a job was secured, but it's rare to see this in college coaching.
This preemptive breakup is good for Tubby Smith and for Kentucky.
Tubby takes a lucrative job with a Big 10 team (albeit a far less prestigious one than Kentucky) and get to move to America's hidden gem.
Kentucky avoids a browbeating from sports columnists who 1) would act outraged that Kentucky could fire a coach who won 20 games a season and 2) would claim Kentucky is not the premier program it thinks it is (a/k/a "The Alabama Treatment").
Minnesota, who has fallen to the bottom-tier of the Big 10 in the years since Clem Haskins was tossed for cheating, gets a proven, high character coach who has won a national championship.
And Kentucky civil rights "leaders" get to cry wolf, suggesting that Tubby was mistreated by Kentucky top brass and fans because of his skin color.
What do you think of Tubby Smith's move to Minnesota? And who should Kentucky pursue as a replacement?
