Cannon Smith, star quarterback of Olive Branch High School, an Ole Miss commitment and the son of FedEx founder Fred Smith, was arrested and charged with possession of ecstasy in Collierville, Tenn., on Thursday night, The Clarion-Ledger reports.
Smith has been released on $7,500 bond.
From The Commercial-Appeal:
Smith, 19, a senior quarterback at Olive Branch High whose given name is Frederick B. Smith, was driving a 2005 Mercedes late Thursday in Collierville when he was pulled over by police, Collierville Police Chief Larry Goodwin said late Friday night. An 18-year-old male passenger in the car was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
It's not known if criminal proceedings will impact Smith's status as an Ole Miss football recruit or why the high school senior was driving a 2005 Mercedes instead of the newer 2007 model.
UPDATE:
• Smith was driving his mother's Mercedes because his Ford pick-up was in the shop, a source told The Commercial-Appeal.
• He's going to be represented by an attorney with Glankler Brown in Memphis.
